Paypal Founder unveils plans for near-supersonic “Hyperloop”. The plan floated by the Entrepreneur Elon Musk would link Los Angeles and San Francisco in 30 minutes. The same journey takes one by hour plane and almost six by car.
The idea involves using magnets and fans to propel capsules floating on a cushion of air through a long tube at up to 800mph. Hyperloop would swoosh passengers in pods through a series of tubes elevated above street level by earthquake-resistant pylons.
The tube is kept up by air pressure beneath the pods, a lot like how an airhockey table works. Mr Musk outlined his plans in his blog and said that the technology would work best for cities that are less than 900 miles apart. After that supersonic air travel would be faster and cheaper.
The 42-year-old tech tycoon, is used to dreaming big, he founded Paypal, Tesla Motors and SpaceX, a space exploration programme. He says the invention would be solar-powered, safe and reliable regardless of weather conditions.
